Burnt Coffee

Cynthia watched the clock slowly mark the time while she waited in a small room. She had stayed there an hour and anticipated that the police would soon question her about the incident but did not know what she was going to say to them. It is not like any of it made sense to her however she had to wait while she fidgeted with her sunglasses. The black plastic frame gave them a classy look. Cynthia could not remember whether she bought the sunglasses or maybe borrowed them. She was nervous because she was certain that the police would not believe anything she told them.

The police would say she was an over-emotional woman or something like that and began to kick the table with her fashionable combat boots. She recalled a thrift store had the boots in a display window, found the appearance irresistible, was amazed they were a perfect fit and bought them.  Cynthia felt tough when she wore them, like she could kick the shit the out of anything brave enough to challenge her. As she continued to fidget with the sunglasses the police approached the room and brought some disgustingly burned coffee with them.

The police officers finally entered the room with the burnt coffee and offered sugar and cream which she accepted.  After she made it drinkable with abundant additions of cream and sugar Cynthia took a sip of the coffee. The officer asked her if she was able to see the incident that occurred around 12:15pm.  She acknowledged she was outside her office and heard the noise everyone else heard and that high-pitched noise must have been the beginning of it. She stated that she went outside and saw the start of the event but did not know how to describe it.

The officers encouraged her to not worry and just try her best. She sipped more coffee and attempted to verbally explain what happened in the middle of the street. Although the sun was shining and it was a clear day, there was the appearance that blackness crept over the area. Cynthia took another sip of coffee and said it was like a black spot was in the middle of the street. Then everything went weird and she felt like she was drugged. During the time of the interview she felt sideways and unable to explain her feelings.  She felt agitated as she tugged on her boots as she struggled to remember the incident.  She wished she was under a blanket with some ginger ale.  She did not want to face what she saw anymore. It was emotionally draining.  She closed her eyes for a minute and woke up in a hospital bed with all kinds of tubes attached to her.  She did not understand what happened or how she got there.  The machines beeped and she tried to talk but her throat was too dry.

She banged on the bed frame and made some noise. The nurses came in, took some of the tubes out and got her some water.  They told her to calm down and not try to stand up yet.  They brought some water and paged the doctor.  They told her she had been attacked and had been in a coma for two days.  She tried to wrap her mind around what happened between the last sip of coffee and waking up here.  The doctor came in and told her she passed out in the alley after she was attacked, that is when the police called an ambulance.  She felt the stitches on her abdomen.  They were big and it scared her.   She did not remember the attack but she remembered the strange feeling when the black spot was above main street.  She was confused but she knew that this did not happen this way because she had those boots on. She was confused but she realized how hungry she was.  She told a nurse she was hungry and thirsty and they brought her some food.  It was breakfast food because they had not changed over to lunch yet.  She nibbled on some turkey bacon and wished it was real bacon.  She drank the Orange Juice and finally got the bad taste out her mouth.  The doctor told her the police needed to talk to her.  She asked where her boots were and the doctor said the police had taken them for evidence.  She got confused and had a perplexed expression on her face as she looked at the doctor.

This did not make any sense she was just at the police with her boots on.  She tried to remember what had happened to bring her to the police station.  She remembered leaving her office and the sun being bright she wished she had some sunglasses. She tried to remember where she got those sunglasses because she knew she had a pair and remembered holding them.  She closed her eyes trying to focus on the memory but it was scrambled.

When she opened her eyes she was in her office again but no sunglasses but remembered this from before. Once again she heard that high pitch noise she had heard before.  She went out of the office to the alley between the buildings and saw those sunglasses and surmised a drunken college student probably dropped them over the weekend. Finder keepers she said to herself.  Then she remembered this had also happened before. A man came from the back of the alley and saw her there.  He looked high on something and came towards her.

She recalled that this happened before and remembered she had been attacked. She looked at the boots and remembered waiting for the burned coffee in the police station.  She lifted her boot up, made contact with the man’s head and a knife fell out of his coat.  He was out cold on the payment like a slab of meat.  She called the police and they took him to the hospital because they could not wake him up. They took her to the police station in the same room she remembered before with the clock ticking slowly for an hour.  They came in with some burnt coffee just like she remembered.

They asked her what happened and she remembered this time.  They took her statement and told her that man was wanted for stabbing and raping 3 other woman in the same area but usually at night he was so filled with drugs he probably did not know what time it was.  She had asked if anyone had seen a giant black dot over the street at the same time.  They answered yes but asked her how she saw that from the alley.  She said she heard a high pitch noise, saw it from the office window and that was why she went outside.  It was weird no one could understand what happened but she felt weird but safe.

She tapped the glasses on the desk.  She knew something weird had happened but whatever it was had caused her to see the events out of order.  She left the police station feeling lucky because something or someone was looking out for her.

The sirens rang out in the distance and he knew the police were coming.  He had 5 minutes to get the situation under control before civilians got involved and most likely got hurt.  Civilians did not know how to handle these situations when they happened that was why he was called in.  He made a lot of money doing this.

This skill set was very specific and because of pure accident.  It is funny how life works out to be given such a gift because of timing.  The extraterrestrial had crashed his ship probably because of solar flares they surprised all the new pilots.  The vehicle looked like a triangle.  He wondered what cover story to use this time.  Making up cover stories was his favorite part of his job other than meeting new people.  He got the extraterrestrial out of the crashed ship.  It was funny the people were always worried about radiation and such but he had seen enough broken ships to know when it was dangerous.

He pulled the grayish green pilot out and revived him.  The pilot was scared and very concerned that an alien had pulled him out but he calmed down when I started to talk and the universal translator kicked in.  He got them to cover the alien craft with a blue tarp.  He told the police that had arrived that it was a military operation and that there had been an accident and that the material was slightly dangerous but they would clean it up and they keep the road closed while they made everything safe.  He even created a press release and marveled at the story he created.

He got the alien who was named Phil of all things processed.  Phil’s species was on the approved list so he could transmit a distress signal and be discreetly returned to the public without notice. Phil had to wait two weeks and stayed at the “Hotel”.  It was nice to learn about different species.  They collected his ship but the engine had been damaged and was leaking radiation that was mostly harmless to humans.  It was something they used to make faster than light drives.  It used some sort of time dilation but she did not understand that much about how it worked. The levels were a little high and spiked when they drove down the main street.  It might create some temporal anomalies.  No permanent damage to Earth.
